Exam content

The GCSE Geography B exam for 2026 is made up of a few components, namely:

This paper covers Hazardous Earth, Development dynamics, and Challenges of an urbanising world. Edexcel B expects you to understand both physical processes (like hazards and earth systems) and human patterns (like development and urban change), then apply them to places and people.

To do well, revise with comparisons. Many questions reward comparing places, levels of development, or management approaches. Build a habit of writing “where, why, so what”, where you locate the issue, explain the causes, then explain impacts and responses.

This paper focuses on the UK’s evolving physical landscape (coasts and rivers), the UK’s evolving human landscape (including dynamic UK cities), and geographical investigations linked to those topics.

Because fieldwork is embedded here, you should revise physical and human fieldwork methods alongside the content. When you learn coasts, also learn how you would investigate coastal change. When you learn cities, learn how you would investigate inequality, environmental quality, or perceptions. That integration makes the exam feel much easier.

This paper covers People and the biosphere, Forests under threat, and Consuming energy resources. It is designed to test your ability to make decisions and justify them with evidence.

Edexcel B includes extended writing, and Paper 3 ends with a longer decision-making style question, so practise writing conclusions that are clearly supported by evidence. The most effective preparation is to practise weighing up options. You should be able to argue both sides briefly, then choose and justify. This is exactly the skill the paper is designed to reward.

What to expect in the GCSE Geography B exam 1GB0

Pearson Edexcel B GCSE Geography has three externally examined papers. Paper 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes, 94 marks, worth 37.5%. Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 minutes, 94 marks, worth 37.5%. Paper 3 is 1 hour 30 minutes, 64 marks, worth 25%.

Edexcel B is very evidence-led. Many questions are built around resources, maps, data, and short scenarios. The fastest mark gains come from using the resource properly. Quote a figure or pattern, interpret it, then explain what it suggests. If you only describe the data, you miss the higher marks. If you interpret and link it to the question, your marks climb quickly.

Paper 2 is where fieldwork understanding really matters. When you see a fieldwork question, identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and at least two control variables immediately. Then, if asked to evaluate, write specific limitations and specific improvements. For example, mention sample size, biased locations, inconsistent measurement methods, and how repeats or systematic sampling could improve reliability.

Paper 3 decision-making is a major opportunity for top grades. Train yourself to write balanced mini-evaluations, then a strong conclusion. A reliable structure is: option A benefits, option A drawbacks, option B benefits, option B drawbacks, then a final justified decision that refers back to the scenario and uses evidence. This keeps you focused and matches how marks are awarded.

Finally, build “case study packs” that are easy to deploy. Each pack should include one named place, a few facts or figures, and a couple of impacts and responses. Then practise using them in short, precise sentences. In the exam, keep extended answers structured, use paragraphing clearly, and do not add extra points that contradict your conclusion.
